Blue Screen of Death – It’s a Patent!
Most of us are Windows user and whether you’re an XP, Vista, the really good NT/2000 or the dreaded/what the fuck happen to ME; we all have experience the blasted and irritating Blue Screen of Death. Serge knows as he is a user of Windows as well as Ubuntu and Apple‘s OS. Now it is to the knowledge of Serge and he has confirmed the following news whereby Microsoft has made the following patent :
Microsoft Patents Crippling Operating Systems
Yes there is a patent filed by the people at Redmond that allows them to cripple the windows operating system that you use daily. Slashdot squad that we love to has stated the patent works in the following manner of which US Patent No. 7,536,726 (it was filed in 2005) for intentionally crippling the functionality of an operating system by ‘making selected portions and functionality of the operating system unavailable to the user or by limiting the user’s ability to add software applications or device drivers to the computer’ until an ‘agreed upon sum of money’ is paid to ‘unlock or otherwise make available the restricted functionality.’
The same writer added the following comment that according to Microsoft, this solves a ‘problem inherent in open architecture systems,’ i.e., ‘they are generally licensed with complete use rights and/or functionality that may be beyond the need or desire of the system purchaser.’ An additional problem with open architecture systems, Microsoft explains, is that ‘virtually anyone can write an application that can be executed on the system.’
Serge just do not know if he should laugh or cry or both at the same time. Sure *nix is open source and everyone who knows how to compile can make a new software and then another person can modify it and make a newer and better one, but this is what being open source is about. It is about the creativity of our fellow programmers who reads the if_else tags and making sure that the compiler can read the line breaks properly.
It is understandable to control the process of software development, but Microsoft what ever you’re doing right now is hilarious. Between these guys and with *nix and Apple, the rate of virus developement is at a ratio of 5 to 1. Serge will not deny that open source has its quirks and retardedness and virus, but hey we are just awesome! Thus we say to Microsoft screw your patent and drop it!
