CHEER 2011 – Where Students Goes Mad
Once again at Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil, The Star Rage organized the yearly CHEER competition where students from all around Malaysia competes in Malaysia’s premiere Cheerleading competition. Unlike last year, this CHEER was held for only one day instead of the usual 2 days; reason was because of BERSIH that happened the week before. Nevertheless, the event was good and we dare say it was better than last year.
How can a one day event be better than two days? Simple, the teams that participated only had one shot. Just one chance to win the coveted prize of being Nation CHEER Champions and by golly-wolly jilly-willykers; they performed the best that day could for their school, for their family, friends, for the judges and above all, they performed to theirs hearts content. This is Serge and to the teams that won and didn’t win, you did really good.

Jeremy of RED FM and another guy were the emcees of the night. The both of them really brought the house down and by the end of the day, we could see Jeremy suffering from a lack of voice as his vocal chords stretch to the point of no return. Excellent work to the both of them.
As always, Serge was there early and before he arrived, Serge guided some Dynamitez/Mickeymitez supporters on how to get to the stadium. It would be another hour before the actual competition start and thus Serge watch some of the teams do their one minute run-through. During this time, he bumped or more like some of the cheerleaders who knew him from last year bummed into him from behind. Hugs and kisses ensued.
All of a sudden the crowd goes wild with screams and shouts and cheers echoing through the stadium. This happen even before Jeremy open his mouth to say hello to all, although this would probably his 3rd time being emcee for CHEER; Jeremy was still shocked by the roaring and near deafening crowd. The stadium was probably 1/4 full but know this, the cheers and screams of the supporter was so loud that it felt like it was at its full capacity twice over.

Soon the teams performed and since they have only one shot, they really went all out. Spin jumps, scorpions, bow and arrow, toe touch and others were performed. Some teams were very good in the technicalities but in their cheer choreography, they were a little bit off. There were teams that had great cheer choreography but technicality-wise was much to be desired. Yet, they performed so well that everyone cheered for them and when one of the team had a near major accident; the crowd cheered for them to rally the team on.
Now this is what CHEER is all about. To cheer for your team and most importantly to cheer for your enemies to rally them on no matter the situation. Two teams caught the attention of Serge and they were Mickeymitez and Cyrens. These two, Serge had seen them performed in previous CHEER events and every year, he has seen both of them improved in their technicality and in their choreography.
Mickeymitez is an all-boys team while Cyrens is an all-girls team. They both got the crowd cheering for them, their supporting school and even from their rivals too! With Calyx being the last team to perform, they did the best that could. Soon everyone was waiting to know who would be champions, which team would it be to hold to coveted trophy of CHEER 2011 Champions.

As they waited, Serge was among the Cyrens team. They were anxious as their team was not called in any of the auxiliary prizes such as best make-up or best-dressed. Fifth place was announce, then fourth and third. Yet where were their names? Did they perform bad that they did not win anything at all today? Some had tears rolling down their eyes, maybe this year wasn’t meant to be.
With a voice like a soothing wind that calms the tempest and soothes a sobbing babe, Jeremy announced the CHEER 2011 champions and you guessed it right… CYRENS won. This is the second time they won and last year they were champions too. Icing to this sweet cake is the fact that their sister team Rayvens took 1st runner up; thus it was a 1-2 finish from Sri KL. The tears, the joy, the screams of pure pleasure rang out and Serge felt moved in both of being nearly crushed and stampeded by the crying Cyrens / Rayvens.
Before Serge left the stadium and headed home, he saw the amount of fan girls that Jeremy had. His fan girls waited in line just to get his John Hancock and his picture. To everyone who came and supported, thank you for coming and next up; some videos.

Oh there is only one complain Serge has for CHEER 2011. He does not know which Media that lady was from but.. for the love of all that is good, you do not fuckking ask the cheerleaders to stand in a way that you want them to stand in. They are waiting to hear if they won or nor, they want to huddle together amongst their friends. Even though you might be a female, but forcing them to turn so you can take a shot of when they cry tears of joys or tears of sadness is damn bloody wrong in the opinion of Serge.
As a photographer, you need to get yourself ready for shots such as this. This is not some studio shoot where you can arrange them on how you like it. To that idiot, yes Serge knows you might be reading this and yes we are calling you an idiot.
